The Socceroos had qualified for the round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup and despite losing to Germany in the group phase, and then lost in the knock-out phase of Italy.

Australia's journey toward Brazil 2014
Since joining the AFC, Australia target escaped a second time in a row in the second qualifying round. Turns out the road towards Brazil 2014 make it difficult for the Socceroos, who have to adapt to the changes that occur in the formation of the team.
A comeback for Thailand and the defeat of Oman as a memorial to Australia's performance, although Australia qualified for the next phase with Group winner status. Then Australia opens the next round with disappointing results, a goalless draw against Oman and Japan before losing to Jordan 2-1.
Although derailed, they rise with victory over Iraq before the two results of the draw and 4-0 defeat of Jordan that puts them at the end of the qualifying Group. Australia remained calm in the final qualifying round and as substitute Josh Kennedy scored to lock the victory of Australia.
Coach Holger Osieck was sacked in October 2013, after losing consecutive 6-0 against Brazil and France in friendly matches. Australia joined in Group B with spain, the netherlands and chile.
